Setting off in the dark from valley level to reach the summits before sunrise is always something of a gamble. The long climb through chill night air followed by the first hint of light in the high atmosphere, then the long pre dawn brightening can all too often abruptly change to hill fog and drizzle. On this morning however the dawn was spectacular and from the summit of Harrison Stickle the valley of Langdale was shrouded in mist.
